Sports photography refers to the genre of photography that involves shooting all types of live sports, often for news publication. In most cases, this is a branch of photojournalism where the main application is for editorial purposes. However, there are many hobbists who are involved in sports photography; usually these photographers are involved in small scale sports events taking photographs for personal websites, friends and family.
With most sports, the photographer faces the challenge that the action is fast, far away, and in poor lighting conditions. It is extremely important that the photographer is positioned well - which is why most professional sports photographers seek VIP access (press passes) at live events in order to get as close to the action as possible. Flash photography is frequently forbidden while the sporting action is taking place. Sports photographers therefore tend to use lens with wider apertures, and cameras with good high ISO performance, and fast shutter speeds.
